Fujifilm FINEPIX JX280 – Combines Style with Modern Technology
Fujifilm has expanded its line of ultra-compact J-Series digital camera with the introduction of the new FinePix JX280. This is a compact digital camera that’s packed with modern features but priced reasonably. It takes pride in being equipped with a 14-megapizel CCD, a 2.7” high-resolution LCD, and a Fujinon 5x wide angle optical zoom lens. All these features and more are encased in the camera’s high-grade metal body that protects them against scrapes and bumps while delivering simple yet elegant look at the same time. It comes in color black and is so sexy with its 18.5mm width, making it fit in your purse or pocket so easily.
Fujifilm’s JX280 allows you to enjoy HD movies in 720p and quality stills at 1920 x 1080. It is also outfitted with amazing features like Tracking Auto Focus that’s perfect when you need to take pictures of a moving object and you find it hard to keep the subject within the frame. There’s also a Panorama Mode with Auto Stretch that’s ideal for use when shooting landscape, huge buildings, and party shots. Since great photos are often spoiled by people grimacing or blinking, the FinePix JX280 is outfitted with smile/blink detection feature. It works with the company’s Face Detection technology, which doesn’t capture a scene unless a smile is detected.
The ultra-compact Fujifilm FinePix JX280 is based around a 14.1 effective megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD image sensor coupled to a Fujinon-branded 5x optical zoom lens. Maximum image resolution is 4,288 x 3,216 pixels in the camera's native 4:3 aspect ratio, and both 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratio modes are also available. The JX280's lens offers actual focal lengths ranging from 5.0 to 25.0mm, equivalent to 28 to 140mm on a 35mm camera - a useful wide angle to a moderate telephoto. The Fuji JX280 has a two-step aperture, offering either F3.6 or F8.0 at wide angle, and either F5.9 or F13 (with an ND filter) at telephoto. Minimum focusing distance is ordinarily 1.5 feet at wide angle or 2.6 feet at telephoto, but drops to just 3.9 inches in Macro mode at wide angle, or 2.0 feet at telephoto. There's no true optical viewfinder on this model, with all interaction taking place on a 2.7-inch LCD display with 230,000 dot resolution, and this display provides 96% frame coverage.
The FinePix JX280 offers ISO-equivalent sensitivity ranging from 100 to 1,600 ordinarily, but can raise the maximum to 3,200 equivalent at a reduced resolution of three megapixels or below. Exposures are determined using 256-zone metering, and shooting modes include Auto, SR Auto, Program, and a generous seventeen scene modes that allow a modicum of control over the look of images. The Fuji JX280 doesn't offer any form of optical or mechanical stabilization, opting instead solely for a software-based approach to combatting blur from camera shake. Shutter speeds range from 1/1,400 to eight seconds. Burst shooting is possible at up to 1.2 frames per second, albeit with a burst depth of only three shots.
The JX280's contrast detection autofocusing system offers a single focus point at the center of the frame, but does include tracking capability to follow your subject as it moves around the frame. The Fuji JX280's built-in eight-mode flash has a range of 1.3 to 9.8 feet at wide angle, or 2.6 to 6.6 feet at telephoto, which can be reduced to a range of one to 2.6 feet in macro mode. A two- or ten-second self timer is available to allow the photographer to get into the photo, or to reduce blur when shooting on a tripod.
The only difference we're aware of between the JX280 and its predecessor, the JX270, is an updated Motion Panorama mode which, while not as sophisticated as that in simultaneously announced Fuji models, can capture three consecutive shots with a single press of the shutter button. The interface requires the user to line up the next image based on a circular knockout from the previous image, surrounded with crosshairs to aid in alignment, but the camera will automatically capture the next frame when it detects that the images line up correctly.
As well as JPEG-format still images, the Fuji JX280 can capture Motion JPEG-compressed AVI video with monaural audio. Movie resolutions include high-definition 720p (1,280 x 720 pixels), VGA (640 x 480 pixels)Â and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) with a rate of 30 frames per second. The JX280 does allow use of the zoom lens during movie recording, but mutes audio while the zoom is operating.
The Fuji FinePix JX280 stores its data in 24MB of built-in memory, or on Secure Digital cards including SDHC types, but not the latest generation SDXC cards. Connectivity options include USB 2.0 High Speed data and NTSC / PAL standard definition video output. Power comes from a proprietary NP-45A lithium ion rechargeable battery, rated at 180 frames on a charge.
